What is Limewash Paint?

Luminescent. Depth. Healthy. Hygienic. Soothing. Subtle.

Lime Wall Paint is a special kind of paint. It’s made with natural ingredients like lime and mineral pigments. When you use it, you get a beautiful, matte finish that looks really stylish.

Our limewash paint is made using the highest quality mature pit lime that has been aged for 3 years. To tint the limewash paint we use natural earth mineral pigments. The result is a radiant, luminescent hand-crafted finish that cannot be duplicated by any acrylic or latex paint.

This paint is specially made so the lime can “bloom.” This creates a soft, textured look that’s like a matte velvety suede.

Lime Wash Paint: Interior and Exterior Mineral Paint for Timeless Elegance

You can apply Lime Wall Paint directly to any porous surface that is unsealed and unpainted. It works on plaster, stucco, brick, stone, slate, concrete, and more.

To use Lime Wall Paint on painted surfaces or new drywall, start with Mineral Prime. It works for both interior and exterior areas.

Lime wash is a beautiful finish for wood, brick and stone. Unlike traditional paint our lime wash absorbs into the substrate and creates a natural contour of the stone. Our limewash paint will not chip or peel because it is not a topical film forming finish. There is no latex shine since our lime wash is a matte finish that calcifies into the masonry.

Benefits of Limewash Paint

Luminescent and Radiant

Lime Wall Paint coupled with the natural earthen mineral pigments refracts light in a unique way. The limewash mixed with the mineral surface breaks up incoming light and refracts it in every direction. This luminescence across the mineral surface adds character and a glowing effect to every wall.

Healthy and Hygienic

Lime Wall Paint is eco-friendly as it contains only naturally occurring ingredients from the earth. Lime Wall Paint is a natural, non-toxic choice for your walls. It's made from minerals and has no harmful chemicals or fillers.

This means it's safe for you and your family, and it's also good for the environment! When applied, it absorbs harmful carbon dioxide and odors from the air. This happens during the curing process. As a result, it improves indoor air quality.

This highly breathable lime wash paint protects your living space by not trapping moisture and humidity inside walls. Lime Wall Paint has an alkaline pH, which makes the surface hygienic. It also resists mold and bacteria.

Hand Crafted and Beautiful Colors

Lime Wall Paint offers unique, subtle, yet rich colors and finishes. Every shade is hand-made from scratch using natural earth pigments. The soothing, suede-like texture adds a subtle charm.

Light dances on the surface, giving your walls a stunning depth you never imagined. The beautiful shades of lime wash paint will transform your space. They add a designer touch to every room.

Lime Wall Paint works well on both indoor and outdoor surfaces. It can be applied to drywall, plaster, stucco, masonry, wood, and even previously painted surfaces.

Lime Wash Paint Coverage

Gallon coverage rate over primed drywall is approximately 350-400 square feet for one coat. Coverage varies based on the surface's porosity and absorption. For porous surfaces like brick or concrete, one coat covers 150-175 square feet.

3.5 Gallon coverage rate over primed drywall is approximately 1,225 - 1,400 square feet. Coverage depends on the surface's porosity and absorption. For porous surfaces like brick or concrete, one coat covers 600-650 square feet.

Two coats of lime wash paint are recommended. They create the desired depth, softness, glow, and mottled effect, while also offering good protection outdoors.

For a 10x12 feature wall (120 square feet), you'll need 240 square feet of coverage for two coats. A gallon will be enough, and you can store any leftover paint for touch-ups or future refreshes.

If your room wall square footage is 600 square feet you will need 1,200 square feet of lime wash paint for two coats so you would buy a 3.5 gallon

This is a natural mineral based material and slight variations will occur from batch to batch. Conditions such as humidity and porosity variations in the surface can also impact the color uniformity. It's a good idea to order 15-20% more paint than you need. This ensures you have enough from the same batch and plenty left for future touch-ups.

How to Use Limewash Paint

What you will need.

If you are going to lime paint new drywall or previously painted surfaces you will need our Mineral Prime.

Lime Wall Paint is best applied with a large block brush. This application technique creates the soft, mottled look of lime wash, especially when applied randomly in a crisscrossing technique. The different brush strokes create tonal variations and help reflect light in different ways. This enhances the texture, depth, and mottling effects.

To get started with your lime wash project, you'll need the following materials:

  • Mineral Prime (for new drywall and previously painted surfaces)
  • Lime Wall Paint (see Coverage)
  • Block brush
  • Mixing bucket
  • Painter's tape
  • Plastic or drop cloths (for floors)
  • Paint roller
  • Stirring stick
  • Spray bottle
  • Paint tray
  • Eye protection
  • Ladder

Prep and Prime.

Surfaces must be clean and free of dirt, dust and mildew. Dampen all masonry surfaces before painting lime wash.

For new drywall or previously painted surfaces you will need to use our Mineral Prime. It creates a micro-porous surface for lime paint. This ensures a consistent look with even absorption and adhesion of the paint. Mineral Prime was designed specifically for use with our lime wash paint.

One coat of Mineral Prime is needed for previously painted surfaces. For new drywall that hasn't been primed, apply two coats. Newly installed drywall coated with joint compound must be completely dry and have an even porosity before priming.

Mineral Prime can be applied directly over new drywall, however this is not a blocking primer. Telegraphing of joint tape and seams can occur. This mineral-based primer creates a microporous surface for the best results and proper adhesion with lime paint.

If you're unsure about the surface porosity, first seal with a high-quality blocking primer for drywall. Then apply one coat of Mineral Prime.

You apply the primer in a traditional method of vertical application using a roller. Lime Wall Paint can be applied after a minimum of 6 hours, ideally overnight.

Lime Wash Exterior Paint

For exterior lime washing, it's recommended to pressure wash the surface. The substrate should be clean and free of dirt, contamination, or any previous seal coatings. You will need one coat of Mineral Prime for Interior + Exterior for previously painted exterior surfaces.

Any horizontal surfaces will weather more rapidly than vertical surfaces. It is not recommended for horizontal surfaces that are in high traffic areas and exposed to continuous moisture. Do not apply if rain is expected within 48 hours. Also, avoid applying if temperatures will drop below 32°F for 8 hours after application.

Lime Wall Paint Application.

Lime Wall Paint is a creamy and full bodied ready to use lime wash paint. It’s ready to use and offers great versatility for achieving the desired finish and effect.

For large spaces you can roll or spray the first coat. For tone on tone applications, apply the first coat full strength. For the second coat, dilute the lime paint with water at a 1:1 ratio (one part paint to one part water). Adding water does not change the color of the lime wash paint.

Please plan to paint the lime wash on the entire wall at one time. Stir paint thoroughly - as you stir the lime wash paint it becomes creamy. It is essential to keep a wet edge to create the effect and utilize the radiance of the lime. Do not stop in the middle of the wall.

You can divide sections by a natural dividing point like a corner. It is best to "cut in" as you spread the lime wash across the wall. You can start anywhere you want on the wall but be sure to keep a wet edge. You can spritz the wall with water if the area dries to keep a wet edge.

We recommend brushing out both coats for the most mottling and a plaster aesthetic. For large areas and faster application, use a roller. Apply the lime wash in random sections for the first coat. (You can also roll on and back trowel the first coat.)

Please make sure to apply the second coat in small criss cross X pattern with a block brush. (Refer to the Tutorial videos for visual display and thorough step by step instructions.)

Allow enough dry time so the coats are completely dry before moving to the second coat. We suggest waiting 12 hours for the first coat to dry before moving to the second coat.

Keep in mind the wet mixture is much darker – as it dries it lightens to the desired color.

Final Step – Moisture cure. After the second coat of Lime Wall Paint, it's important to water cure the surface. This helps the lime cure harder and with moisture, both for interior and exterior surfaces.

This simply means to mist the walls a few times with water after the final coat. Mist it, let it dry, repeat. Only mist the walls, do not wet them so that there are water streaks, a light mist setting is required.

Safety information - lime paint is alkaline and can cause skin and eye irritation. Protect eyes and skin from spills. Please wear eye protection. Safety Data Sheet (SDS) available upon request.

Sealer or No Sealer?

Lime Wall Paint leaves a matte velvety suede like finish. It cures over time and can be touched up easily with leftover paint. We recommend to leave the lime wash paint natural and not seal it unless you need to have a protective durable sealed finish.

If you choose to seal the finish it will darken very slightly. Apply one coat of our protective Matte Wall Sealer after 7 days of the final coat of Lime Wall Paint. This will allow the paint to cure and create the beautiful dimension and effects.
